For the start of the process we had a few design criteria:
As compact as possible
Must be made of 3x3" and 2.5" box section because thats what we had a lot of stock of at the time.
Only has to cut aluminium well and light steel
Provisions for automation
Had to use the baldor motors we had on hand at the time
Can't draw more than 32A of current as the workshop only has a 64A supply for the entire thing including lights and server room
Must be fast
Needs to not break the bank in the cost of all the components
Needs to use the Hywin 20mm HG linear rails we had on hand at the time.
I first thought that basing the machine of a tormach 1100MX could be a good idea, I spent 10+ hours designing it, it turned out that the machine footprint was fine, but the size of the enclosure needed would be way to big for our workshop!
I then looked at the Hass Toolroom mills and Mini mills, These had a similar problem of the large enclousure.
I then came across Fanuc's line of CNC machines; Fast, accurate, cuts aluminum, and the medium and small machines would be perfect in our application!
I started by making this model, based on the 1100MX. but as I said before, the model diddnt work for our application so it was scrapped, if you do want to have a look at it, email us at admin@stjarnor.co.uk and we will send you it!
The second model was much more sucsessful, this model is not avalable for download for now, until we have completely finished it. just so we can make more changes before we publish it.
this model is much more rigid than the previous one, all the other braces and the main frame. I didd't have much stock spare, but loads of 2.5" box section so the main elecrical cabinets are being each held up by two peices of 2.5x2.5 inch box section with a wall thickness of 3mm! overkill i know!
All of the different sizes we used were:
3x3 inch box section with a wall thickness of 3.5mm
2.5x2.5 inch box section with a wall thickness of 3mm
20mm plate for the liniar rail guides
40mm plate for the spindle housing
30x30mm angle iron for the enclosure
20x60mm plate for the mounting pads between it and the secondary bolt on base
38x25mm (TBC) aluminium with a wall thickness of 2mm for the secondary enclosure
